“ Lady Gaga's The Fame this week surpasses Coldplay's Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends as the best-selling album in digital history. The Fame has sold 783,000 digital copies, compared to 782,000 for Viva La Vida.

While The Fame has sold more digital copies than Viva La Vida, the Coldplay album has realized a higher percentage of its sales (29%) in the digital sphere than the Gaga album has (22%). The obvious reason: Gaga's album has sold more overall copies (physical and digital combined): 3,539,000, compared to 2,693,000 for Coldplay's album.

The key to the success of Gaga's album has been a non-stop barrage of hits. The tracks on The Fame have sold a combined total of 24,645,000 digital copies. This constitutes an all-time record, far ahead of the nearest runners-up, the Black Eyed Peas' The E.N.D. (17,878,000) and Rihanna's Good Girl Gone Bad (17,041,000).

Viva La Vida became the best-selling album in digital history in June 2008, when it surpassed the previous record holder, John Mayer's Continuum. Mayer's album first claimed the title in March 2007, when it surpassed The Fray's How To Save A Life. The Fray's album moved into the lead in December 2006, when it bumped off Coldplay's X&Y.

The digital album market has so far been a disappointment to the beleaguered music industry. After six years of digital album availability, just five albums have topped the 500,000 mark in digital sales. In addition to The Fame and Viva La Vida they are Taylor Swift's Fearless (655,000), the Twilight soundtrack (617,000) and Kings Of Leon's Only By The Night (603,000). The music industry has been hoping (praying?) that digital albums would catch on in a big way. These sales numbers are nothing to sneeze at, but they're not anything you can pin the future of an industry on. ”



“ Lady Gaga's exclusion from the best new artist category at this year's Grammys has caused the Recording Academy to change eligibility requirements for the next ceremony.

Although Lady Gaga was the most popular new artist of 2009, she was ineligible for a best new artist nomination. Her hit "Just Dance" had been nominated in 2008, before she was a platinum-selling act, and previous Grammy nominees can't be nominated for best new artist.

After Lady Gaga was excluded, Recording Academy President Neil Portnow said: "There will be some changes so that particular situation won't repeat itself."

The changes were announced Wednesday. The rule change allows previous Grammy nominees to be eligible, as long as the artist hasn't released an entire album and doesn't win. ”

» It was one year ago today, June 25th 2009, when Michael Jackson, the King of Pop, passed away at age 50 as a tragic shock to everyone around the world. In honour of him, TheCelebrityNetwork's first throwback video post is "Remember The Time". I just saw the video a few moments ago on BET's 106 & Park and remembered how much I loved both that song and video, even though I was really young. The cinematography, choreography, and overall wow factor should forever remind everyone why Michael was the best and how he paved the way for the next generation, originating the concept of the high-budget, mini-movie music video.

Since Michael's passing he has sold an estimated 35 million albums worldwide and generated $1 billion in sales.

“ In the 24 hours since it was first released, Lady Gaga's epic "Alejandro" video has already succeeded in kicking up a cloud of controversy over its use of religious symbolism in several key scenes — scenes that some believe go too far.

Gaga, who was raised Catholic, has never been one to shy away from exploring the topic of religion in her work, but with "Alejandro," she seems to have pushed things to the limit. In the video, she and director Steven Klein combine Catholic imagery with sexual themes like S&M and androgyny. In one scene, LG wears a latex version of a nun's robe, and in another, she sucks on rosary beads. Already, the clip has drawn complaints from the Catholic League and, somewhat surprisingly, Katy Perry, who wrote on her Twitter account Tuesday: "Using blasphemy as entertainment is as cheap as a comedian telling a fart joke."

In fact, "Alejandro" seems to have created such a controversy that, hours after speaking with Klein about the video's meaning, we sent him a follow-up e-mail about the use of religious imagery and symbolism and the criticism both have garnered. Here, exclusively, is his response:

"The religious symbolism is not meant to denote anything negative, but represents the character's battle between the dark forces of this world and the spiritual salvation of the Soul," Klein wrote. "Thus at the end of the film, she chooses to be a nun, and the reason her mouth and eyes disappear is because she is withdrawing her senses from the world of evil and going inward towards prayer and contemplation."

Klein added that the scene in which Gaga ingests the rosary beads is meant to represent "the desire to take in the holy."

An e-mail to Lady Gaga's label, Interscope Records, seeking additional comment on the "Alejandro" video had not received a response by press time. ”

» Here is the music video for "Alejandro", the third single from Lady Gaga's sophomore studio album "The Fame Monster". The hotly anticipated video was directed by Steven Klein and premiered earlier today via VEVO.com.





Gaga sure loves creating these short films that are much longer in length than your average music video. This was very artistic and visually stunning, as we've all come to expect from the so-called new 'Queen of Pop'. It was very circa 1980s Madonna-esque with some nice choreography. While I enjoy it for its unique concept, I don't appreciate her use of religion and some of those odd symbols, which some claim are signs of illuminati. I really love this song, moreso than any other Gaga song with the exception of "Just Dance", and I wish this video were more summery, bright, and fun, like on a beach in Mexico. Nonetheless, there's no denying Gaga's done it again with yet another music video that puts her in the upper echelons with the best in the business.

This is a decent video. Rihanna is killing the fashion game with her haute couture outfits. She's always pushing the boundaries, and we've never seen her go this far into the rock world, playing dress-up by looking like Slash in this video. It's a dark, edgy, black-and-white clip which fits right in with this whole era. Though not my favourite video of hers, I enjoy how Rihanna remains outrageous and different each time.
